London Trip: Part 5, Stonehenge

This is one thing I had really hoped to see while we were in the UK.  We stayed overnight in South Hampton in order to fit this in our itinerary.

Isn't it funny how you hear about something and then your mind begins to create an idea about that something and then, when you finally get to see that something, it isn't quite like how you thought it would be?  Stonehenge was kind of like that for me.  It seems inevitable that in my mind the stones were huge and would have a feeling of mystery about them.  The stones are large just the same, but not like they were in my mind.  At any rate, I am so glad we were able to fit this in and I'm glad I can share it with you.

Hello Stonehenge!

Those are some big rocks!

The traveling crew.

These are the only ones who really know the "secrets" of Stonehenge.  (Any body speak sheepish?)

Ivan is inspired.

He sits to capture the moment in a sketch.

We walk all the way around and photograph from all angles.

We really have too many photographs.

The only time tourists can go closer to the rocks is during the early morning tour (which we didn't opt for).  The other times would be during the summer and winter solstices.

Good-bye Stonehenge...someday we will know all your secrets.

We passed this memorial on our way to the visitor center.  At first it seemed strange and out of place until I learned that during World War I the land in the area of Stonehenge was used for the military.

This was very interesting to learn about.
